On Intention, Sincerity, and Truthfulness (Kitāb al-niyya, wa'l-ikhlās, wa'l-sidq)

Three qualities lie at the heart of every spiritual act: intention, sincerity, and truthfulness. Without them, deeds are forms without souls. Imam al-Ghazali's treatise on these three stations (taken from his monumental Ihya Ulum al-Din) is among the most searching analyses of the inner life ever written in Islamic scholarship.

This translation makes Ghazali's precise and penetrating analysis available in clear English, with sufficient context to make the argument fully accessible. Required reading for anyone serious about the purification of the heart.
