Description
The Hilya Sharif is a calligraphic arrangement originating in Ottoman times — a word-portrait of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ that has historically been displayed in Muslim homes across the world. The word hilya means "ornament," and in the tradition of the Shama'il it is translated as "beautiful description."
"Hasan ibn Ali رضي الله عنه reported: 'I asked my maternal uncle, Hind ibn Abi Hala, who was skilled in describing features, about the beautiful description of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I desired for him to describe some of his features to me so I could cherish and hold on to them...'" — Al-Shama'il al-Muhammadiyya
The Components of the Hilya Sharif
- The basmala at the top
- A central disc with the description of the Prophet ﷺ from Hadith 7 of the Shama'il
- Four smaller discs with the names of the four rightly-guided Caliphs
- A Quranic verse describing the Prophet ﷺ (21:107 or 68:4)
- The remainder of Hadith 7 at the bottom, with prayers and blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ
Displaying the Hilya Sharif in the home revives a beloved Sunnah — and the practice carries real spiritual significance in this time.
