Most of us were never taught this

The seerah, the Prophet ﷺ's life story, tells us what happened. The Shama'il describes how he ﷺ looked, spoke, slept and smiled. The Khasa'is asks a different question: what did Allah give him ﷺ that He gave to no one else?

Do I need to read Arabic?

No. Everything is translated into English. The Arabic is printed alongside for readers who want the original.
How is this different from the Shama'il?

The Shama'il describes the Prophet ﷺ: his appearance, habits and manners, as the Companions saw him. The Khasa'is is about the gifts and honours Allah gave him ﷺ alone, in this world and the next. They complete each other.
Is it a scholarly text or something I can read from the first page?

Both. These are classical works with their sources cited in the footnotes, translated so they read from beginning to end.
